History
Katy has a rich history and there are many stories to tell about our past. Among them are the story of how our community was founded and the earliest families who lived in Katy.
Today, we are lucky enough to have a wonderful park to enjoy in our own city. Rick Rice Park was built by Interstate Municipal Utility District (MUD) in 2009.
The MUD transformed a storm water detention area next to Mason Creek into a multipurpose recreational park. The park is named in honor of Rick Rice, a Houston native who dedicated decades to improving west Houston’s parks and outdoor environments.
The park was envisioned by the MUD’s Land Development Division, which created a multiuse space that is similar to European parks and New York City’s Central Park. It is an open meadow surrounded by grassy knolls where families can picnic, couples can relax and kids can fly kites. Explore more!
Facilities
There are plenty of beautiful parks to explore in Katy, and Rick Rice Park is one of the most gorgeous ones. Whether you’re looking for a short walk or a day of relaxation, this is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy some fresh air.
This 13-acre green space offers a half-mile walking trail around a lake with a fountain, an iconic pedestrian bridge, inspirational artwork, and educational signage. Other amenities include Francesca’s Garden, the CanCare Pavilion, and Veterans Memorial Plaza.
The park also features a unique pedestrian bridge that connects the lake loop with the Mason Creek Hike & Bike Trail, and several plazas and overlooks. The trail system was built in cooperation with Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Steve Radack and the Mason Creek UD to increase access to Rick Rice Park for residents and visitors.
In addition, Rick Rice Park was named in honor of a Houston native and a longtime member of the Interstate MUD board, who devoted decades to improving west Houston’s parkland and outdoor environments. In his words, “a well-maintained park is one of the best investments a city can make in its people and their environment.”

Rick Rice Park has all the hallmarks of a great place to visit and some pretty nice amenities too. One of the highlights is the pedestrian bridge that connects Rick Rice to the Mason Creek hike & bike trail. The other high points are Francesca’s Garden, CanCare Overlook and the ever impressive Veterans Memorial Plaza. The most noteworthy aspect of the park is the quality of the outdoor space, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.
